1492 to 2012 is not a long time in history, yet for individuals, families, 21st century lives it is a lifetime–a few lifetimes.
The plaque at the base says that Columbus’ being is something to celebrate. As his finger points to the beautiful Pacific I wonder.
All this expensive Malibu real estate and million dollar homes among savage overgrowth and mountain slopes, how different is it because of this European explorer? How have individual lives been influenced since 1492? Who’s 21st century celebrations thank this man of history? What would our world look like without this man’s doings?
I don’t think “celebration” is the right word.

We stand up straight and look into the eye. Militarily we tread through splendid walks. Purest white. Barest feet. Marbled cool and cold. We’ve made it to the end. The empty sculptured hall for all to gawk and cheer. Oh, master we kneel to thee on rain smudged roads of red. Let us kiss thy ring.
